Window Blind Safety

Window blind cords and chains can pose a risk for babies, children and vulnerable people who could injure or even strangle themselves on the hanging looped cords.

 

New legislation which came into force in February 2014 governs the way in which manufacturers, suppliers and installers of window blinds are legally bound to supply only products which are manufactured as safe, tested and installed to strict guidelines and which will be enforceable by law.

 

Common child safe designs include wand operated vertical blinds, spring controlled roller blinds, friction controlled pleated blinds, friction operated EASi-Fit (Perfect Fit) blinds, motorised blinds and crank operated blinds.

 

Any window blinds which are installed with cords and chains have to be installed with breakaway connectors, cord and chain safety retainers or cleats and the cords and chains have to be maintained at a minimum 1.5 metres from the floor level.
